The heart of DC, profiling seven athletes to watch out for this year. Compiled by Sophia Hosford & Ben Davis
Washington Spirit: Ashley Hatch, Forward
Ashley Hatch, 25 years old, Gilbert, AZ, 5’9. Hatch, a record setting standout at Brigham Young University is a forward for the Washington Spirit. Drafted second overall in 2017 by the North Carolina Courage, Hatch was acquired by the Spirit in 2018 via trade after earning Rookie of the year accolades. A prolific goal scorer and strong addition to any team, Hatch has tallied 19 goals thus far in her NWSL career.
Washington Mystics: Elena Delle Donne, Forward
Elena Delle Donne, 30 years old, Wilmington, DE, 6’5. Delle Donne is the first WNBA player to win MVP honors with two teams in 2015 and 2020. With accolades galore, Delle Donne has been a record breaker, since her time at University of Delaware, four-time All-CAA First Team selection, Three-time CAA Player of the Year, and UD’s all-time leading scorer for men’s and women’s basketball to name a few. Most recently, Delle Donne led the Mystics to their first WNBA Championship in 2019.
DC United: Federico Higuain, Forward
Federico Higuain, 35 years old, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 5’8. Higuain, acquired by United as a player coach has totaled 55 goals over nine years in MLS thus far. Having played with Columbus Crew for the majority of his MLS career, Higuain came into MLS already a pro, with experience in Mexico, Argentina, and Turkey. A consistent starter and veteran of the game, Higuain will provide needed leadership to the youthful side.

Washington Nationals: Carter Kieboom, Third Basemen
Carter Kieboom, 6’ 2” 22 years old, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina- With the departure of star 3B Anthony Rendon in the offseason, Kieboom has some big shoes to fill. The Nationals top prospect is looking to make a big leap to become their third baseman of the future.
Washington Redskins: Derris Guice, Running Back
Derrius Guice, 5’ 11” 23 years old, Baton Rouge, Louisiana- Derrius Guice has had multiple major injuries during his 2-year career. While on the field, he has been dangerous, averaging 5.8 YPC, the question is can he stay on the field?
Washington Capitals: Braden Holtby, Goaltender
Braden Holtby, 6’ 2” 30 years old, Marshall, Saskatchewan- This may be Braden Holtby’s last stretch with the Capitals, so I am looking forward to seeing him play in a Capitals jersey for maybe the last time in his career.
Washington Wizards: Bradley Beal, Shooting Guard
Bradley Beal, 6’ 4” 27 years old, St. Louis, MO- Bradley Beal has had his best year of his career in 2019, averaging 30.5 PPG, we are looking forward to see him shine on the court, if he decides to not opt out.
